Federal Penalties for Trafficking

Individuals convicted for trafficking significant amounts of crack cocaine or crystal meth face minimum sentencing - even first offense trafficking. The prison term and fine imposed depend on the amount of drugs involved. For drug trafficking crimes involving cocaine and crystal meth, the sentencing guidelines are as follows:

• More than 28 grams: mandatory minimum sentence of 3 years in prison and a $50,000 fine
• More than 500 grams: mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years and $100,000 fine
• More than a kilo: mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and $250,000 fine
• More than 10 kilos: life without parole
